Two Violins and Cello Trios
Trio Sonata, Op. 3, No. 2 - Corelli/Hall

Corelli lived in the late 1600’s, a time when the violin first reached its peak of development. This magnificent trio sonata was originally written for 2 violins and cello with harpsichord in the figured bass style, but in this arrangement the three parts stand alone musically without the keyboard. There are 4 short movements with a total duration of 7 minutes using all repeats. Skill in position playing is necessary. This trio is also arranged for violin trio with optional viola (20712107) and the same music material is also available for string quartet under the title of Corelli Suite (20703101).
Trio Sonata in G Major - Becker/Hall

Dietrich Becker is a lesser known 17th century composer, but a competent one. The three movements are titled, Adagio, Allegro non troppo, and Allegro con spirito. The first is homophonic and the last two contrapuntal and very imitative requiring independent reading of rhythms. Some position playing is required. Duration is 3 minutes.
Firework Music - Handel/Hall

Handel’s Firework Music has enjoyed similar popularity to his Water Music. Just two contrasting movements are included in this arrangement for 2 violins and cello. The Minuet can be played all in first position, but La Rejouissance requires some skill in higher positions. Both movements are in the key of D Major and lie well for strings. The third part can also be played by violin or viola with parts supplied.
Short and Suite - Faber/Hall            Score sample

Little is known about Faber, except that he was a 17th century amateur musician. However, these three dance tunes are delightful pieces to serve as a basis for this short suite. The Waltz, Minuet and March all three call for independent rhythmic playing, and lie extremely well for string instruments. In addition to performance by two violins and cello, it is equally good for violin trio or 2 violins and viola. Optional parts are supplied. It appears on both the B and C OMEA lists. In class B the trio must play all movements but in class C only two of them.
A Baroque Trio Suite - Buttstedt, Schleswig,Fischer/Hall

Three movements by lesser known Baroque composers are included in this suite: Minuet, Sarabande and March. The first two are in G Major and the third in D Major. All parts can be played in first position and lie well for strings. However, all parts are rhythmically independent, offering challenges for younger players. Bowings and dynamics are well marked to assist in learning to play musically. The cello part can also be played by viola, or 3rd violin. Optional parts are supplied.
Bach Suite - Bach/Hall            Score sample

Three contrasting pieces are included in this suite of short pieces by Bach. Minuet, Gavotte and March. Keys are G major, G minor and D major and parts can all be played in first position. It is very tastefully scored for 2 violins and cello, or violin, viola and cello.
Early American Suite - American Folk Tunes/Hall            Score sample

This trio offers a lesson in American history and lots of fun in the process. Two hymn tunes are sandwiched in between four different fiddle tunes. The six song medley can be performed as two separate pieces of three songs each. It was originally written for 2 violins and cello, but also can be played with this same arrangement by violin, viola and cello. It is also available as a string quartet (00479), as a quintet (00436) and as a piece for full string orchestra (00478). Players and audiences will thoroughly enjoy this piece.
Two Minuets - Bach/Hall

Bach composed these two Minuets for piano for his wife Anna Magdalena. The are familiar to anyone who has played piano for several years because they are standard fare. The melodies are often performed as solos for young developing players on any and all string instruments as well. This trio arrangement for 2 violins and cello has two other options of instrumentation. The cello can be replaced by viola, or 3rd violin. All of the varied parts are on the score.

“OMEA Class” refers to the assigned difficulty rating on the Ohio Music Educators Association Required List. Sound samples are provided for some of the arrangements on this site. Many of Percy Hall’s compositions and arrangements were originally published by Great Works Publishing or LudwigMasters Publications, whose catalogs were then purchased by Keiser Southern Music in 2020. While many of these publications are currently out of print, most are listed in the Alfred Music online catalog.
