Woodwind Quintets

Olde English Ayres - Hall, arr.
Difficulty: M  OMEA Class: B  Publ. Code: 20404002
These three woodwind quintets have been created to fill the need for literature for this standard ensemble of mixed woodwind instruments (including the French Horn) at a level of difficulty that is realistic for less experienced performers. This particular quintet also gives opportunity to the performers to experience two of the beautiful and exciting songs that we have inherited from England - ”Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes” and “Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be”. The texts of both of these songs are based on the most important emotion in the world - love! The contrasting styles of the two songs demonstrate how music can express both the beauty and the excitement of young love. Both songs are in 6/8 meter but are entirely different in tempo and style, the first being lyrical and the second light and frivolous. Ranges of all instruments are very practical for this level, and an optional bass clarinet part is included to replace the bassoon if necessary.

A Scottish Treat - Hall, arr.
Difficulty: M  OMEA Class: B  Publ. Code: 20404003
These three woodwind quintets have been created to fill the need for literature for this standard ensemble of mixed woodwind instruments (including the French Horn) at a level of difficulty that is realistic for less experienced performers. This particular quintet also gives opportunity to the performers to experience two of the beautiful and exciting songs that we have inherited from Scotland - “Barbara Allen” and “Scotland the Brave”. The firs song is lyrical and the text is about infatuation and unrequited love, and the second in contrast is about military might and valor. Grace notes have been supplied to help with a more realistic imitation of bagpipes. Ranges of all instruments are very practical for this level, and an optional bass clarinet part is included to replace the bassoon if necessary.

My Grandfather’s Clock Still ticks - Work/Hall
Difficulty: ME  OMEA Class: C  Publ. Code: 20404001
These three woodwind quintets have been created to fill the need for literature for this standard ensemble of mixed woodwind instruments (including the French Horn) at a level of difficulty that is realistic for less experienced performers. Henry Work (1832-1834) was born in Middletown, CT and was a printer by trade, but his avocation was a song writer. Besides this familiar tune he is well known for “Kingdom’s Comin’” and “Marching Through Georgia”. This arrangement imitates the clock on several occasions and presents the melody in several styles. There is no ritard at the ending because (as the title indicates) Grandfather’s clock is still running! Ranges of all instruments are very practical for this level, and an optional bass clarinet part is included to replace the bassoon if necessary.

“OMEA Class” refers to the assigned difficulty rating on the Ohio Music Educators Association Required List.

Sound samples are provided for some of the arrangements on this site. These are produced as MP3 files, with links noted after those arrangements for which they are available. Many also provide a "short MP3" alternative for those with slower, dial-up connections. While all sound samples are fairly compact, the shorter versions will typically download four to five times faster than their fuller counterparts.

Score samples are also provided for some arrangements. These show the first page (and sometimes several pages) of the score, and are provided in PDF format. You will need to have the Adobe Reader installed to be able to read these files. If you are unsure if you have this capability, click on a score link and see what happens. If you cannot read the file, a free version of the Adobe Reader is available at www.adobe.com.
