Woodwind Choirs

American Revolution Songs - Hall, arr.
Difficulty: E  OMEA Class: C  Publ. Code: 20405001
This arrangement (and in fact all three of the listings on this page) was designed for Middle School and easy High School use in situations where there are no (or few) color instruments such as oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, tenor and baritone saxophones. The arrangements will sound complete with only flutes, clarinets and alto saxophones, but optional parts are provided for those color instruments which when added will add depth and color to the total sound. The two songs included are an important part of American history - “Chester” and “Yankee Doodle”. Interesting historical notes are on the score. Keys are F and Bb major, and ranges are basic for this level. Style, articulations, phrasing and dynamics are all carefully marked to assist in rehearsal time - often quite limited.

Kum ba Yah Variations - Hall, arr.
Difficulty: E  OMEA Class: C  Publ. Code: 20405002
Read first the description of this arrangement which is the same as the one above regarding purpose and instrumentation. Kum ba Yah is a song first sung by African-American slaves in the south and has become a familiar and popular song for all ages and races. The title simply means “Come By Here” and serves as an invitation for Jesus to be present whenever they gathered for worship and relief from their difficult lives. This arrangement includes four contrasting treatments of the tune There is some rhythmic independence in all parts, and each part needs to emphasize the tones marked with accidentals to bring out the richness and the surprises in the harmony. Duration is 2’20”.

Southern Belles - Hall, arr.
Difficulty: E  OMEA Class: C  Publ. Code: 20405003
Read first the description of this arrangement which is the same as the first one above regarding purpose and instrumentation. There are two Southern Belles in this short piece - “Aura Lee” (a college song made popular by Elvis Pressley as “Love Me Tender”). and a Stephen Collins Foster favorite - “O Susanna”. which became a favorite song of the 1949 Gold Rush. The songs are treated in two contrasting syles - the first being legato and lyrical, and the second is light, staccato and frivolous. Performers and audiences will enjoy these songs as arranged for this variety of woodwind instruments. Total duration is 3’30”.

“OMEA Class” refers to the assigned difficulty rating on the Ohio Music Educators Association Required List.

Sound samples are provided for some of the arrangements on this site. These are produced as MP3 files, with links noted after those arrangements for which they are available. Many also provide a "short MP3" alternative for those with slower, dial-up connections. While all sound samples are fairly compact, the shorter versions will typically download four to five times faster than their fuller counterparts.

Score samples are also provided for some arrangements. These show the first page (and sometimes several pages) of the score, and are provided in PDF format. You will need to have the Adobe Reader installed to be able to read these files. If you are unsure if you have this capability, click on a score link and see what happens. If you cannot read the file, a free version of the Adobe Reader is available at www.adobe.com.

How to order:   Many of Percy Hall’s compositions and arrangements were originally published by Great Works Publishing or LudwigMasters Publications, whose catalogs were then purchased by Keiser Southern Music in 2020. While many of these publications are currently out of print, most are listed in the Alfred Music online catalog.
