Trumpet Trios – New listings
Steal Away Little David – Spirituals arr. Hall

Rehearsing and performing African American spirituals offers lessons in history as well as music. Two distinct styles are presented, the lyrical style always more challenging. The key signatures are F and Ab major and range extends from low G to high G. The trio was originally published for trombone trio and is now available tor trumpet trio and also for French horn trio.
Three Polka Dots - Percy Hall

The title is a play on words: the style is that of a polka, with the staccato style indicated by dots over or under the note heads. This piece was originally composed for flute trio. It has been so popular that we are happy to publish it for trumpet trio as well. The trumpet parts are in F major, and the first part lies in good range - just a few top line F’s. The third part goes down to low A several times but does not dwell in that range. The beginning and ending are staccato, and the middle section is lyrical for contrast. Your trumpets will love it!
Trumpet Trios
Crusaders and Victory - Hall,arr.

This arrangement brings together two very familiar hymn tunes. However, both of the tunes originally were not religious music. “Crusader’s Hymn” was sung by farmers in Silesia (now a section of southern Poland) and first published in 1842, and Victory was composed in 1591 by the great Italian composer Palestrina. This arrangement treats “Crusaders Hymn” in a contrapuntal ”Victory,” which has been very freely arranged in a dramatic rhythmic style with altered harmony and phrase lengths. Range, endurance and technique are not overly demanding, but musicianship, phrasing and style should be a high priority. Both pieces are in the key of F major. It is suitable for contest, concert or religious services.
Three Pieces (Kyrie, Sanctus and Gloria) - Hall            Score sample

The musical themes are original in these three short contrasting pieces. They are rhythmically based on the opening text of the three parts of the liturgical Mass. The mood, tempo and style of each piece is also meant to be expressive of the text. When you speak the Latin word kyrie you will hear that particular rhythm in the music. The same is true of the words sanctus and gloria. The secular and sacred are mixed in the “Gloria” as the joy of the music is expressed as an Italian tarantella. Keys included are C major, C minor, and back to C major. Range of the first part is not overly demanding, including several high A’s and one Bb, but not sustained. All parts are melodically and harmonically interesting. This piece was written for a senior trumpet recital at Ashland University. It offers challenges that are worth the effort. This trio is also published for Trombone Trio (20532416) under the title of “Kyrie, Sanctus and Gloria”.
Trumpetella - Hall            Score sample

As the title clearly indicates that this is in the style of the Italian tarantella written for trumpets. A tarantella is in 6/8 meter, and characteristically begins at a moderately lively tempo and as it approaches the climax, it becomes faster and faster toward an exciting ending. It was composed to be performed at an end of the year recital by the trumpet students of Eddie Chiudioni, who quite obviously has Italian ancestry. All three parts are quite challenging technically, and the melody is passed around to all three. Keys are F, Bb and G major and the high range of the first trumpet part only reaches high A twice. This is lots of fun to play and a real audience pleaser, especially with an effective accelerando to the end.
Square Dance and Round - Hall            Score sample

This trio was written as a birthday gift at a surprise party for a close friend and colleague, Eddie Chiudioni. Eddie is principal trumpet in the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and also an outstanding trumpet teacher. The title is a play on words with the Square Dance perhaps sounding a bit more like a polka, and the Round is definitely a round, or canon, calling for all three parts to be played exactly the same tune, but at two measure intervals. All parts are equally demanding with lots of slurred 16th notes at a fast tempo. The key is G and C major and range is very sensible, the first part having just one high G. Lots of fun to be had playing this trio, and lots to learn from the experience.
Triple Treat - Hall

This trio is written for three trumpet players of equal ability with melodic interest in all parts. The range of the first trumpet part is not above high F, and the 3rd part rarely goes below middle C.Players must be able to read independent rhythms and have sufficient technical facility to negotiate slurred runs of 16th notes at a moderately fast tempo. This has been a popular trio in Ohio contests. It definitely has musical merit. It is also published for flute trio, clarinet trio and saxophone trio.
Two for Three - Hall            Score sample

The title Two for Three simply refers to two pieces for three players. It was originally written for trumpet trio, then published for sax trio, and has been a popular piece in Ohio contests in both versions. Now it is also published for flute trio. The opening section is very lyrical with flowing melodic lines and close harmonies calling for expressive playing. The second section is basically a march and must be played in the staccato-marcato style. Players will learn how to balance some harmonic dissonances, and each part is assigned several two measure solos. Range is not a problem avoiding the lowest and highest ranges of the instrument making the prospects of proper balance possible.

This trio is designed for players with a very limited range, keeping the performance stress of endurance at a minimum, and each player is provided with an occasional few bars of rest, so essential to all brass players, and so often neglected. The first trumpet part does not go above D in the staff, and the third part only goes down to A below middle C twice. The trio opens with a very short and simple eight measures of legato playing, and quickly moves into a moderate polka tempo and style. The polka begins with all playing the same rhythms, but branches into some independent rhythms. Keys are C, Bb and F major. this is an excellent choice for a first trio experience in contest.

Flourish for Four Trumpets - Hall

Flourish, in music, means to play in a brilliant or dashing style. This piece has been conceived for young trumpet players to experience this style so characteristic of brass music, and trumpet music in particular. Fanfares are played in unison, in harmonic form, and as solos by all four players. Ranges are limited with the young player in mind, and several passages in the lyrical style contrast the staccato marcato style of the basic fanfare introduction and theme. Each part is given measures of rest frequently to aid endurance. This composition offers an outstanding small ensemble musical experience for the young trumpeter.
Trumpet Quartets
Gaudeamus Igitur - Hall, arr.

Let us rejoice is a free translation of the Latin title “Gaudeamus Igitur” which is a college song originally from Europe. Brahms used this tune as the finale of his well known “Academic Festival Overture” which he composed as a gift to the University of Breslau, Poland upon the occasion of receiving an honorary degree. In this arrangement the theme is played four times in contrasting variations in keys of Bb, C and F major. The variations offer contrast in meter, tempo and style. The range of the first trumpet includes quite a few high A’s and several Bb’s but none of them are sustained. All parts are independent making it fun to play and interesting to listen to.
Songs of Joy - Spohr: Hall

Louis Spohr is a lesser known German composer who lived at he same time as Beethoven. He was an outstanding violinist and is remembered mostly for his violin music, but also tried his hand at opera. The first song in this set of two pieces, “Proudly As The Eagle”, is a song of joy from one of his operas. It is followed by a college song, “Vive L’amour” which applauds the value of friendship. This ensemble was first very successfully arranged for trombone quartet, and now has been transcribed for trumpets. Range is not demanding with the first trumpet not above high G. Dynamics, style, articulation and phrasing have all been carefully marked to aid in the preparation of a successful performance.

This is an excellent piece giving young trumpet players an opportunity to play music in four part harmony within an accessible range. The first trumpet has only two top line F’s, and the 4th part has a few low A’s and 2 G#’s. The harmony is rich and full with great appeal. There are some independent rhythmic demands at times, but often there is more than one player playing the same rhythm. The introduction is a ten measure legato section, leading into fanfare type rhythms. The key is C major and A minor.

This quartet was written to give young trumpet players an opportunity to play music within an accessible range. The first trumpet part is not above 4th space E and the 4th part rarely goes below middle C. There are many independent rhythms but often two players are playing identical rhythms. The Prelude is lyrical and the Processional is in a dignified march tempo. Both movements are in the key of C major. This quartet is not quite as difficult as “Introduction and Fanfare,” but just a notch above “Procession and March”. It is also published for flute quartet.

This quartet was written to give young trumpet players an opportunity to play music with four part harmony within accessible range. The first part rarely goes above D, and the 4th part goes below middle C only twice, and those are B naturals. Both pieces are in the key of C major with very little technical demands, but interesting changes in style. This offers a wonderful opportunity to learn an effective marcato staccato style. Sufficient rests have been given each player to minimize the endurance problem. Dynamics and phrasing are well marked putting an emphasis on the learning of effective musicianship. This is not quite as difficulty as “Introduction and Fanfare” or “Prelude and Processional”.

“OMEA Class” refers to the assigned difficulty rating on the Ohio Music Educators Association Required List. Sound samples are provided for some of the arrangements on this site. Many of Percy Hall’s compositions and arrangements were originally published by Great Works Publishing or LudwigMasters Publications, whose catalogs were then purchased by Keiser Southern Music in 2020. While many of these publications are currently out of print, most are listed in the Alfred Music online catalog.
